Exchanges

The new economic model provides for a wide range of interlinked exchanges, some run by individual clubs or organisations and some run centrally on behalf of us all.

Our role is as central regulator of all exchanges, in practice this is being implemented by a number of arrangements including:-

50-50 organisation, a New Atlantis Trust Partnership has the role of actually running central exchanges and some others on behalf of some areas that are franchised to specific service providers or others. They will also run the central elements that members can access.

Internet Consortium a New Atlantis Trust Partnership, has the task of defining the central exchange and interfaces between common elements. The membership of this are New Atlantis trusts, consortiums and others who have an interest in exchanging information. Internet Consortium also is responsible for some of the organisation of how these requirements are met.

Others are involved with exchanges with specific functions, or in developing sections of the overall, this is co-ordinated through Atlantis Virtual World Ltd a New Atlantis Trust and company registered in the UK.

So how is this achieved

Exchanges are, put simply databases, and computer programs, it is the central database management, and security of this that 50-50 organisation takes care of.

Particular functions are organised around those who use the facility or may be a part of the development undertaken by a club or consortium.

Initially the programs to undertake this is accessible only online, over the internet, but phone modules to allow some transactions to be done using a mobile phone are also being designed.

The definition of how these parts fit together is where Internet Consortium comes in, revising and making sure that all changes in the designs are implemented or trapped by central software.

The core exchange:-

  • is very simple just a data file on members, containing minimal data
  • an ability to move credits between member accounts, in barter currency and other units
  • it only moves units in the same currency, and only works with positive balances
  • a membership module allows clubs to keep membership information up to date, set up standing order instructions involving barter units, and some other operations
  • a user module allows members to change some of their own data, passwords etc, as well as check balances

The barter exchange has a number of units,

  • one is based on agreements,
  • another on transfers,
  • another feedback,
  • another on services offered,
  • relating specifically to buying and selling barter units is an exchange that has two sections, a section available to all members allowing anyone to offer to buy or sell barter units and a contract side that is used by clubs to source barter units at an agreed discount in order to issue to members and also to contract buy barter units from clubs and some others, both of these are toped up by the issuing of new units when the exchange has insufficient available.
  • Another unit will be added to allow conversion between currencies at some point, allowing approved traders to also do this and to pay out currencies to members.

The service provider exchange will list services available through service providers, agreements and transfers.

Other exchanges or modules can in some cases be designed directly to link to the core exchange, while many times they will link via another exchange such as a part of the barter exchange.

Non linked exchanges will offer matching operations, such as offering items for sale to non members while some, like classified sales sites, will appeal to both those outside and members, by allowing several payment gateways allowing payment to be made by credit card, and by barter units.

The advantage of this design is expandability, new facilities and services can be developed and tested independently and added without disrupting the rest.

This is by necessity a simplified description, and of course there is a little more to it than this.
